In this workshop properties of wood and basic wood carving technique will be introduced and practised. We will sculpt from blocks, assemble tiny parts, cut reliefs, discuss ideas and sharpen our blades in order to explore the wide range of artistic expression offered by small scale wood sculpture.
We will create wood miniatures with a simple knife. We will start with an introduction to knife sharpening. The cutting technique will first be practiced by exploring vernacular techniques for the creation of ornamental reliefs. Then we will move on to 3-dimensional objects so called „Messerschnittfiguren“. These practical exercises will be accompanied by lectures and discussions about the properties of wood and historical and contemporary examples of wood sculptures. Towards the end of the workshop, each participant will be encouraged and accompanied to develop a small individual artistic project, utilizing the introduced techniques.
